In nature, quartz sandstone, quartzite, and vein quartz exist. Quartz sandstone is a consolidated clastic rock, with a quartz debris content of over 95%. The main mineral component is SiO2, which is an important industrial mineral raw material.

The color of quartz sand is milky white or colorless and semi transparent, with a hardness of 7. It is brittle and has no cleavage. It has a shell like fracture surface, a greasy luster, a density of 2.65, a bulk density (1.6 for 1-20 mesh), and 1.5 for 20-200 mesh. Its chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties have obvious anisotropy, are insoluble in acid, and slightly soluble in KOH solution, with a melting point of 1750 ℃.
